People are getting more time and money to
get involved in different sports activities nowadays
with social and economic growth, and the sport
service industry is also expanding due to the
growing health consciousness along with the
pursue of a better quality life. According to the
survey conducted by Allied Market Research, the
global fitness equipment is growing with a
compound annual growth rate of 3.89%, and it is
predicted that the market will reach USD 119
billion by 2020.
There are about 1,300 sport venues/ gyms in
Taiwan with the turnover of USD 531.2 million
according to the statistical data from the Ministry
of Finance of Taiwan. Among all venues, the
numbers and turnover of “fitness centers/ clubs” is
the only category that’s been growing every year,
from 131 and 66.5 million in 2011 to 225 and
161.2 million in 2015, setting a new high record.
Over the years, “Beauty” does not stand for
being thin and angular anymore, it’s changed to
being healthy, fit and balanced. Aside from fitness
center and treadmills, more fitness equipment and
sports have appeared to offer different options for
people. According to the statistics, the top 10 most
popular sports are running, boxing, spinning, water
skiing, TABATA, TRX, pole dance, kettlebell
workout, ZUMBA and foam roller.
And sport activities are not limited to younger generations anymore, with the promotion of the authorities,
the population of all ages participating in sports is growing as well. Especially with the rising number of seniors in
Taiwan, the needs and chances for recreational sports for elders have grown significantly in order to live a
healthy life. With sub-replacement fertility, the parents are even more concerned about their kids to be both
physically and mentally healthy, so there are more and more children’s fitness centers/ gyms and community
sport classes. The business and markets of these two age groups (seniors and kids) are expected to bring a
larger scale of economic benefit and boost the development of sports industry.
