Established in the U.S., El Monte Nursery originally specialized in the import of various ornamental plants from Taiwan for sale to American supermarkets. In order to obtain the best quality ornamental plants, El Monte Nursery set up production facilities in central Taiwan to vertically integrate production and sales channels. After investing much effort, El Monte Nursery has seen impressive results. Since the exports to America have reached a mature stage, the nursery has made visit to China and Japan and laid the groundwork to expand into Europe to apply their current experience in the development of other markets.

El Monte Nursery is primarily a cultivator, processor and exporter of pachira macrocarpa that also specializes in baby pachira or just braided. Seeing that central Taiwan had a ideal climate for cultivation of pachira macrocarpa, owner Wess Chen began large-scale cultivation of pachira macrocarpa starting in 2005. Blessed with a temperate climate, ample water resources and well developed irrigation system, the excellent growing environment in central Tawian can produce top quality pachira macrocarpa that can withstand long-range travel. Because baby pachira is small and lightweight, El Monte Nursery through the use of a special packaging method can pack up to 80,000 plants in one shipping container which effectively reduces shipping costs.

Pachira macrocarpa are competitively priced so anyone can afford to grow them. It is considered an entry level product for end consumers. Compared to the five braided pachira, it takes longer to grow in soil. Baby pachira have relatively short growing period. Customers only have to grow them for about two weeks after they arrive before they are ready to ship out. Not much capital is needed and the turnover rate is high. This is a big advantage for customers. In addition, El Monte Nursery’s pachira macrocarpa are cultivated, processed and exported in one seamless operation so orders can be taken from the customer and the baby pachira product style can be controlled.

Market demand for the pachira macrocarpa has been quite steady over the past 20 years but the market hasn’t changed much. In order to succeed in the marketplace, a product must be good quality or some kind of distinguishing feature. Possessing its braiding technology and packaging method, El Monte Nursery has taken a large share of the market. At present, 100% of their products are exported mainly to the U.S. market. El Monte Nursery is looking to expand into the European and Japanese markets. As for last year’s global financial crisis, El Monte Nursery’s pachira macrocarpa business was unaffected and the quantity of plants under cultivation has doubled over the previous period. Part of the reason may be that pachira macrocarpa has the reputation of bringing wealth. Another important reason is El Monte Nursery has built a reputation for fine quality products. In the future, El Monte Nursery will continue to enlarge the land area under cultivation and increase plant numbers. By strengthening relations with their regular customs and developing newly emerging markets, El Monte Nursery hopes to make a good value product available to people who want to introduce more green to their lives.
